Objective

To renovate and modernize the Grade II Listed Sugar House, a heritage building constructed in 1843, while preserving its historic architecture.

Approach

Copper Projects was appointed by Vastint UK to completely gut the five-story East London property, which used to be a sugar refinery and Victorian warehouse, before adding three modern extensions and incorporating glulam, CLT, and steel hybrid structures. The design approach fused contemporary styling with historic architecture by materials such as exposed timber and brickwork, copper, and sheet rain-screen cladding, and varied stone colours that complied with British Standards and BREEAM

Result

Copper Projects successfully delivered a comprehensive list of services, including full refurbishment, new build extensions, apartments, CAT A fit-outs, and lift installation. The result is an iconic East London property that features three double-height self-contained workspaces, eight residential units, and a lift tower. The Sugar House's historic architecture was preserved while incorporating contemporary design elements, resulting in a harmonious blend of old and new.
